We all want, we all need, to look good. Grooming is important. But the costs. Hair stylists, many who have noticed a decline in business, are aware that budgets are tight. They, along with some consumers, recommend a few ways to save on hair maintenance. • Get your hair cut at a cosmetology school. Bernard School of Hair Fashion on Lisbon Street, Lewiston, charges $4 for hair cuts, Tuesday through Friday, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.. The cuts are done by students with instructors right there.

April showers bring … hair horrors? For us, anyway, those refreshing spring rains mean only one thing: frizzy-yet-lank locks, also known as the worst of both worlds. The line features all types of synthetic-free, petrochemical-free, biodegradable styling helpers, but our favourite is the Calm Smoothing Balm, which acts as a barrier against humidity, controls frizz, and triples as a heat protector using natural rosewood, ylang ylang and lavender oils.

Johnson Products started a half-century ago in Chicago as an innovator in black hair care. The black-owned business sold to a white company, but it’s now back in black hands. Johnson brands Afro Sheen and Ultra Sheen are iconic in Black American households. The company was also an early sponsor of the Chicago television show “Soul Train.” The Johnson family business was based on the South Side, provided local jobs and in 1971 became the first minority-run business listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
