Tougher discipline policies that include barring Des Moines high school students in sports and other activities from being around underage drinking would bring the city's schools in line with other large districts in Iowa, say officials who will debate the changes tonight. The proposed changes would be in effect year-round and would ban Des Moines students in sports, music, drama and other activities from drinking alcohol even if they have their parents' permission or are vacationing in a country where teens can legally drink.

Results of a Chester High School student survey, conducted as part of a periodic school accreditation process, have been quietly circulating among some community members well before their official release. Even Superintendent Gregory Thornton and the district empowerment board have not yet seen the results of the anonymous survey taken by 653 students rating the school’s climate, mission, administration, educational programs and resources, Thornton said Tuesday.

When a surgeon evaluates the upper part of a patient's face, he or she must determine whether the brow is in a good position or whether the eyelids have excess skin. If the brow is indeed the problem, the doctor has to decide which type of forehead lift is right for that patient. Factors that need to be considered when choosing the type of forehead lift to be done include the patient's hairline (is it high or low), the thickness of the patient's hair, and the experience of the surgeon.

Great-looking eyebrows are a beauty must; fortunately, getting brows waxed every couple of months will not break the bank, and it's a way to completely change the look of your face. For those unsure of how to start getting great brows, or how to do at-home maintenance, we asked the "Benefit Arch Empress of Brows," Hillary Foote. Benefit Brow Bars are in the cosmetic departments at Macy's on State Street, 111 N. State, and in Bloomingdale's, 900 N. Michigan.

London - A West Midlands grandmother has been told to cover up three of her garden gnomes - because they're naked. The cheeky statues, one of a man and two of busty women, stood outside Sandra Smith's door for 15 years, reports The Sun. But now Smith, 64, has had to drape little T-shirts over the ornaments after a neighbour complained they were upsetting her children. A council official called and warned her to put clothes on them because they were causing offence.

With the first whack of games in the ‘09 Stanley Cup playoffs completed, it’s time to raise an eyebrow or two (more if you’ve got ‘em) at a few things. First, the Rangers’ play must qualify as one of the most interesting stories thus far, taking two games in Washington, shocking a town that, as Jeff Z. Klein wrote Saturday in The Times, is just starting to catch hockey fever in a big way. On Calgary radio The Fan 960 this morning, NBC/TSN analyst Pierre McGuire said the series had been “Tortorella-ized,” which we can’t find in any dictionary.

I HOPE you all enjoyed the Easter break. Last week I asked readers what they thought the Market Square in Ely could be used for, other than the Thursday and Saturday markets, and in particular on Sundays and Bank Holidays, and several people have replied with some really interesting suggestions, which I will pass on to interested parties and update you when I have had some official feedback. It would be great to see some of these ideas implemented in the near future with a view to encouraging locals and tourists to spend more time in Ely.

Ten new contemporary sculptures, part of the state project for revitalising the downtown area of Macedonia’s capital have been erected on Sunday catching the attention of curious residents. Even since its announcement, this state project has divided the public. While the Ministry of Culture defended it as a long-needed enhancement to boost the cosmopolitan appeal in a city otherwise left with only a social realistic style sculptures from the times of ex-socialist Yugoslavia, some observers question the artistic value of the new art pieces.

A chronological breakdown of a CV belonging to Samwel Ogenga, a Kenyan lecturer at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, shows that he would have started his primary school at the age of one. That is mystery one. Mystery two is where exactly does Onalenna Odhiambo, a full-time student, work? Mystery three concerns the alteration of student marks in such manner that those who would have failed can proceed to the next level.

EDUCATION chiefs have refused free Ipswich Town books for children to read partly because of bad grammar in an introduction written by Sir Bobby Robson, it was claimed last night. The Ipswich Town Independent Supporters Trust wanted to give away 500 copies of Ipswich 'Til I Die in the hope that children who were not interested in reading would pick up a copy and improve their literacy. But Suffolk County Council has said the book is inappropriate because it contains examples of excessive alcohol drinking.

A battle is brewing in the state's capitol and the outcome could mean big changes the next time you vote in an election. What voters are required to show at polling places could soon change. if some texas lawmakers get their way. Should Salt Lake County accommodate a new 1,000-room hotel overlooking the Salt Palace -- and lean on taxpayers to help build it? That's the question the County Council will raise today as officials consider creating an exploratory committee to figure out whether a Salt Palace hotel makes financial sense for Utah's capital and whether public funds should support it.

Read the rest of this entry »
